It all began with a trip to Uganda.

It was the last place in the world I had wanted to go. I knew little about Africa, aside from its diseases and mosquitos. I had dreams of leaving my country but feared that this first trip would also be my last.

I ended up falling in love with a people group who treated strangers as brothers and sang with an unbridled joy within their hearts. They are a nation of orphans, with over 60% of the population is under the age of 18 and over 12% of children without parents.

That trip changed my life. It gave me a calling. It gave me perspective: poverty is not about a lack of effort. It’s about a lack of opportunity.

I made the trip with Compassion International, and this photo was taken at one of the child projects. You couldn’t tell that these children were the “poorest of the poor.” Their joy spoke of an abundance of love that wealth could never buy.
