It Takes a Village

Inspired by the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” this artwork took shape after a life-changing visit to Uganda earlier this year. I traveled there to meet my sponsor child and, in doing so, witnessed the quiet strength of her community. I met the family members and local leaders who shape her daily life. I listened to their stories—and to the stories of those who inspired them, cared for them, and helped them overcome their own struggles. I was deeply moved by the unity of a community that faces poverty, adversity, and hardship together.
This colored pencil and watercolor piece is a tribute to the unseen hands and open hearts that touch all of our lives. It honors the global tapestry of “villages” that nurture, protect, and empower children—not just to survive, but to thrive. May it serve as a reminder that behind every resilient child is a network of love.
